The 2027 Nissan Z delivers a nostalgic touch alongside modern upgrades, including performance wheels and a new paint color, enhancing its iconic design.

The 2027 Nissan Z has been fine-tuned with several enhancements that pay homage to its celebrated lineage while introducing modern capabilities. Among the most exciting updates is the wheel design on the Performance trim, which draws inspiration from the beloved Z31 model. These striking 19-inch wheels, produced by Rays, feature a design that accentuates the Akebono calipers beneath and are paired with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, providing an extra half-inch in width on the rear for improved traction and performance.

Shinichiro Irie, Nissan’s program design director, emphasizes that “the new wheel design carefully balances a modern look while paying homage to the beloved Z31.” This blend of heritage and contemporary styling is a hallmark of the Z series, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate the car's storied past.

In addition to the revamped wheels, the startup animation of the 2027 Z is a visual tribute to its history. Each time the vehicle is started, a sequence showcases the evolution of all seven Z generations, transitioning through the years in a visually captivating manner reminiscent of the popular 'Animorph' style.

Another noteworthy update is the new grille design, which replaces the previous rectangular iteration that received mixed reviews at launch. Paul Hawson, director of Advanced Product Planning & Strategy at Nissan North America, explained the shift: “When we launched this generation, there was a lot of discussion around the front face and the big grille for cooling. We’ve been able to maintain that cooling but have leaned further into nostalgia by adding a horizontal bar through the mouth, reminiscent of the S30 generation.” This redesign required careful adjustments to the vehicle’s internal ducting for cooling and the placement of parking sensors, ensuring functionality while preserving the aesthetic.

Among the more traditional elements returning to the 2027 Z is the iconic "Z" badge, now rendered in a vintage script. This subtle detail enhances the vehicle's nostalgic appeal, reinforcing its connection to the brand's heritage.

The new Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic color—meaning “deep sea” in Japanese—adds a fresh, sophisticated hue reminiscent of the S30z’s Grand Prix Green. Unlike typical green pigments that degrade with time, Yuta Ueki from Nissan’s anti-corrosion engineering team explains that this new color results from a blend of ultra-fine yellows and blues. This innovative approach enhances fade-resistance, ensuring that the vibrant finish will endure the test of time and exposure to sunlight.
Accompanying the Shinkai Green is a refreshed tan interior, evoking elements from the S30. While the tan option is exclusive to the performance trim, buyers will also have the choice of other colors such as Black Diamond Pearl, Bayside Blue, Pearl White, and Solid Red. This flexibility allows for a level of personalization that many buyers will find appealing.
The production strategy for the 2027 Z is shifting towards a more made-to-order system, allowing customers to meticulously choose their preferred configurations. While this may mean waiting for their desired vehicle, the potential for individualization is significant. Given the Z’s status as a future classic, this approach may cater to a line-up of collectors eager to own a piece of automotive history that reflects their preferences.
With growing visibility on the streets, the 2027 Z is poised to make an impression as it hits showrooms. Available in the United States starting summer 2026, it’s anticipated that interest will remain high for this modern iteration of an iconic sports car.
The combination of nostalgic references and modern performance-oriented features allows the 2027 Nissan Z to cater to a diverse audience, from seasoned enthusiasts reminiscing about the past to new drivers looking for a thrilling ride. With careful attention to detail and design, Nissan continues to forge a path that acknowledges its legacy while embracing future possibilities.
