New 2027 BMW X5: Pricing, Specs, and Features for the Updated Luxury SUV

The latest iteration of the BMW X5 is set to hit the Australian market in late 2026, with the launch slated for the fourth quarter, between October and December. The refreshed model will be available in both petrol and diesel variants, paving the way for its competitive standing in the luxury SUV segment.

The prices for the new models reveal a slight increase over their predecessors. The diesel-powered X5 40d xDrive is priced at $143,900 before on-road costs—an increase of $4,000 from the earlier xDrive30d model. In contrast, the petrol variant, the X5 40 xDrive, starts at $145,900, which is $2,000 more than the outgoing xDrive40i.

Additionally, in early 2027, BMW will introduce the electric iX5 and the plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive, further diversifying the X5 lineup. Pricing for these models has yet to be determined, but their expected release will mark the first time the X5 has had electric and hybrid options available.

Design and Interior Enhancements

The fifth-generation X5 showcases BMW's Neue Klasse design language, noted for its bolder and more cohesive styling. This design ethos prioritizes visual impact, with features like taller, narrower kidney grilles enhancing its presence on the road. Inside, the X5 boasts advanced technologies such as BMW Panoramic Vision—a revolutionary display that spans from pillar to pillar at the base of the windshield, providing an immersive driving experience.

The cabin is equipped with substantial updates, including a sizable 17.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, an increase from the previous 14.9 inches, alongside a dedicated display for the front-seat passenger area. New standard features further elevate comfort and convenience with ventilated and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and numerous technological advancements aimed at improving driver engagement and passenger comfort.

Powertrain and Performance Specifications

Under the hood, both the diesel and petrol variants of the new X5 leverage BMW's 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engines, each enhanced by a 48V mild-hybrid system. The diesel 40d xDrive generates 230 kW of power and 670 Nm of torque, providing improved performance over the previous model with an extra 20 kW and 20 Nm. The petrol-powered 40 xDrive is similarly more potent, delivering 294 kW and 540 Nm with enhancements of 14 kW and 20 Nm compared to the outgoing xDrive40i.

Both models feature an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive capabilities. The performance metrics are impressive, with the X5 40d xDrive accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, while the 40 xDrive achieves this in 5.3 seconds.

Dimensions and Practicality

Dimensionally, the new X5 maintains ample space, measuring 4,998 mm in length, 2,000 mm in width (excluding mirrors), and 1,751 mm in height, with a robust wheelbase of 3,035 mm. The cargo capacity is equally impressive, offering about 655 liters with the rear seats up, which expands to 1,850 liters when the rear seats are folded down. This versatility is essential for families and those who require additional cargo space.

Warranty and Servicing

In terms of support, BMW Australia provides a five-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty, ensuring peace of mind for prospective buyers. While there’s currently no information on servicing costs for the new X5, it’s worth noting that BMW has a reputation for competitive service plans which may bolster the overall ownership experience.

Safety and Standard Equipment

Though the new-generation X5 has not yet been assessed by safety organizations like ANCAP or Euro NCAP, it does come equipped with a suite of standard safety features. These include adaptive cruise control with stop/go functionality, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-centering assistance, aimed at providing comprehensive safety for both the driver and passengers.

Standard equipment is generous, featuring 21-inch alloy wheels, an M Sport package, adaptive M suspension, and a panoramic sunroof, among others, which enhance both aesthetics and functionality. This level of standardization makes the X5 competitive and appealing, prioritizing both luxury and performance.

Customization Options and Color Choices

For buyers seeking personalization, BMW offers multiple option packages. The M Sport Pro package adds features like upgraded M Sport brakes and distinctive high-gloss details, all for an additional $3,600. The Comfort Package enhances the interior further with heated armrests and rear seats for another $2,300. Standalone customizations allow buyers additional flexibility in their vehicle's presentation.

Additionally, color choices range from standard Alpine White to a variety of metallic paint options, allowing for further customization. The BMW Individual range also opens avenues for buyers interested in exclusive leather interior options.

With the introduction of the 2027 BMW X5, BMW solidifies its position in the luxury SUV market, offering a blend of practicality, luxury, and cutting-edge technology. As the market anticipates the upcoming electric and hybrid options, the popularity of this model is likely to continue its upward trajectory.
