2026 GWM Tank 500: Pricing, Specs, and Diesel Powertrain Details

The 2026 GWM Tank 500 is now available for order in Australia, featuring a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. This marks the first introduction of a diesel variant in the Tank 500 lineup for the Australian market, following the previous hybrid model. Customer deliveries are expected to begin from mid-September, aligning with the ongoing demand for powerful off-road capable SUVs.

The diesel option replaces the previous hybrid variant in local showrooms, although GWM continues to list the Tank 500 hybrid on its website. In many regions worldwide, a smaller 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine is offered, but the Australian version takes a step up with the larger engine, designed to appeal to off-road enthusiasts and those needing towing capabilities.

Variants and Pricing

The 2026 Tank 500 diesel is offered in two grades and presents a competitive price point when compared to the hybrid variant. It undercuts the carryover Tank 500 Ultra PHEV, which combines petrol and electric power. Both variants carry similar dimensions and aesthetics but differ significantly in terms of performance and fuel efficiency.

Essentially, the diesel model is more economical, providing a robust fuel economy of 7.1L/100km compared to the PHEV’s 8.5L/100km. GWM is currently promoting a purchase incentive for diesel variants: buyers can opt for a $2000 discount or a fuel card, valid until October 30, 2026.

Model Drive-away pricing
2026 GWM Tank 500 Lux diesel $65,990
2026 GWM Tank 500 Vanta diesel $71,990
2026 GWM Tank 500 Ultra PHEV $79,990

Performance and Specifications

Fuelled by the new diesel engine, the Tank 500 generates 170kW of power and 620Nm of torque, which, while lower than the hybrid variant's output of 255kW and 648Nm, still provides adequate performance for off-road tasks. One notable advantage of the diesel model is its increased towing capacity of up to 3500kg, an improvement over the PHEV's rated 3000kg.

All Tank 500 models are equipped with four-wheel drive and come with a locking front, center, and rear differential, although different drivetrain configurations apply. Diesel variants possess a part-time four-wheel drive system, while the PHEV employs a full-time, torque-on-demand layout. Importantly, diesel models do not require AdBlue, simplifying maintenance and operations for off-road users.

Dimensions and Cargo Capacity

The GWM Tank 500 maintains an impressive road presence, measuring 5078mm in length, 1934mm in width, and 1905mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2850mm. Its ground clearance is rated at 220mm for diesel variants, ensuring confidence on rugged terrains.

In terms of cargo, the Tank 500 accommodates family and gear with ease. It features an 98L cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 795L when it’s folded down. When the second and third rows are collapsed, it boasts a total cargo capacity of 1489L. This rivals other SUVs in the segment, making it practical for both everyday use and adventures.

Safety Features

The Tank 500 has garnered a five-star safety rating from ANCAP based on testing, albeit applicable only to the PHEV variant at the moment. Standard safety features across all models include autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and a comprehensive suite of airbags.
