Oscar Piastri Proposes New Zealand as a Dream F1 Race Location

Oscar Piastri has shared an exciting vision for the future of the Formula 1 calendar, advocating for a race in New Zealand.

F1 Grand Prix of Bahrain in Malaysia

The buzz surrounding the recent Bahrain Grand Prix has reignited discussions about the races that could enrich the F1 calendar. Among fans of the sport, there’s a growing desire to return to the iconic Sepang circuit in Malaysia, with additional murmurs hinting at a potential Grand Prix in Africa. However, if it were up to Piastri, the current McLaren driver, he would set his sights on a completely new destination.

Liam Lawson Cheers on Piastri's Proposal

Piastri, who originally hails from Melbourne, Australia, might feel at home during the Australian Grand Prix. Yet, he is eager to expand his racing experiences. While attending a sponsorship event in Malaysia, Piastri articulated his desire for Formula 1 to race in New Zealand, a neighboring country he has yet to explore.

“There are not too many places that we don’t race anymore. We’ve got a lot of races in a lot of different places,” he remarked. “I obviously love racing in Australia. I’ve never been to New Zealand even though it’s just across from Australia. So probably a race in New Zealand because I do want to go and explore the country,” Piastri said.

This suggestion resonates particularly well with New Zealand native Liam Lawson. Lawson, who has yet to compete in an F1 event on his home turf, previously expressed his strong desire for the sport to venture into New Zealand, stating his willingness to do “whatever” it takes to make such a race a reality.

Barriers to F1 Racing in New Zealand

Although New Zealand is home to a popular annual Grand Prix, currently hosted at Highlands Motorsport Park, it has never been incorporated into the Formula 1 World Championship circuit. Lawson provided insight into some of the primary obstacles keeping F1 from making the leap to his country.

“The tracks would need to be upgraded a little bit to FIA standard,” Lawson explained, noting that while the the technical requirements could be addressed, other significant barriers exist. Financial and logistical challenges often complicate the prospect of adding new venues to the racing calendar.

One major concern is the financial viability of hosting an F1 event. Numerous current Grand Prix locations are struggling financially, making potential hosts wary of committing to the expensive hosting rights. This fear could deter New Zealand tracks from attempting to join the F1 calendar.

In addition to financial hurdles, the logistical complications that come with transporting the Formula 1 "traveling circus" to New Zealand can be daunting. Although staging F1 events in Australia, such as the Albert Park race, demonstrates that it can be done, the distance and challenges of reaching New Zealand present additional complexities.

With both Lawson and Piastri embracing the dream of a New Zealand Grand Prix, the conversation may spark further interest in exploring potential racing locations beyond the traditional circuits. Given the current appetite for new venues, the push for a New Zealand race could gain traction in the coming years. Whether or not the logistical and financial challenges can be overcome remains to be seen, but the enthusiasm for such an event highlights the growing community of motorsport fans eager for the sport to expand its global footprint.

As discussions around diversifying race locations gain momentum, it remains to be seen how the F1 governing body will respond to these enthusiastic pleas from drivers and fans alike. The possibility of racing in New Zealand adds to the rich tapestry of F1, which continues to seek new and exciting venues to captivate audiences worldwide.
