Rafael Camara, an impressive young talent from F2, is poised to join Haas in 2027, showcasing remarkable speed and promising growth amidst racecraft challenges.

It's official - Rafael Camara is Formula 1's newest driver, as he'll form part of Haas's 2027 driver lineup.
During his 2026 season, speculation mounted about Camara potentially stepping in for Esteban Ocon at Haas. Conversations with Camara and his Invicta F2 team boss, James Robinson, revealed insights into his journey and approach as he nears Formula 1.
Exceptional Talent and Speed
One of the standout attributes that has positioned Camara as a front-runner in F2 is his exceptional speed. His qualifying performance this season demonstrates a clear advantage over his competitors, with a notable comparison to second-year driver Alex Dunne.
F2 Qualifying Averages
- 1 Rafael Camara: 2.54
- 2 Alex Dunne: 3.77
- 3 Nikola Tsolov: 5.77
- 4 Martinius Stenshorne: 7.54
- 5 Noel Leon: 8.31
- 6 Joshua Duerksen: 8.38
- 7 Kush Maini: 8.85
- 8 Dino Beganovic: 9.23
- 9 Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak: 10.38
- 10 Gabriele Mini: 10.92
His ability to secure five poles as a rookie mirrors the achievement of Oscar Piastri, the 2021 F2 champion. This raw speed has been evident since his 2025 Formula 3 season, further solidifying his reputation.
Robinson commended Camara’s innate talent, stating, "I've never met a driver who is so naturally talented as he is. He has a feeling for the tyres I've never seen before." Such accolades reinforce the expectation surrounding Camara as he transitions to higher levels of competition.
Racecraft Development
Despite his impressive speed, Camara's racecraft still has room for improvement. Similar to fellow Ferrari junior Ollie Bearman, who is likely his teammate in 2027, Camara acknowledges that he has encountered challenges this season. Major errors at pivotal moments, such as in Montreal and Monaco, have hindered his overall performance.
In Montreal, a reckless attempt to overtake resulted in him spinning out, while in Monaco, he lost a potential win due to tyre struggles following a pit stop. Reflecting on these misses, Camara expressed, "There were some moments that could be easily avoided... Overall I think it has been a very good season, because…we always been able to learn and to grow."
His season has been highlighted by both triumphs, including significant wins at Barcelona and Spa, and setbacks that demonstrate the duality of his current skill set. The Madring feature race exemplified this complexity, where a bold move against rival Nikola Tsolov was followed by a reckless maneuver that resulted in a time penalty.
Robinson noted, "He has made a couple of mistakes this year. Rafa has a speed that is undeniable. If he can cut out those silly mistakes and get off the line well, then he's got the makings of a race winner."
Team Dynamics and Communication
Fans have taken notice of the engaging exchanges between Camara and his race engineer, Pau Rivera. Their candid conversations have become a highlight of F2 broadcasts. For instance, in Montreal, Rivera advised Camara to “keep it cool and reset” after a tough moment. Following the Monaco race, Rivera's bewilderment was palpable when he asked, "What was the issue on this lap? Why the f*** did you go so slow?"
For Camara, these intense moments are a reflection of a transparent relationship built on mutual respect. He elaborated, "Since the beginning we’ve always had a very nice relationship, we’ve been very transparent with each other. It’s nothing personal; we’re just trying to maximize and do our best." This open dialogue contributes to the team’s dynamic, reinforcing a focus on growth and improvement.
Preparing for F1
Looking ahead, Robinson is confident in Camara's readiness for Formula 1, stating, "100%. I'd be very, very surprised if he doesn't race in Formula 1." While he has yet to participate in an actual F1 practice session, Camara has been actively involved in testing programs for both Ferrari and Haas, which are permitted to conduct up to 20 days of testing with previous cars this year.
Camara has expressed satisfaction with his test runs: "The tests we did have been always positive… I was able to always learn and to grow during these tests." His rapid adaptability during these activities has supported his standing among potential candidates for the 2027 seat.
When asked about his preparedness for an F1 race seat, Camara confidently replied, "Yes, I don't see why not... In the car, you just do your job and try to always maximize what you can. I think it's the thing that I enjoy the most." His enthusiasm and long-term commitment to racing are evident as he prepares to potentially step onto the F1 stage.
As Camara looks toward his future, there’s a palpable sense of excitement surrounding his potential debut. He acknowledges the challenges that come with F1 but is ready to embrace the experience, saying, "If I'm there it's also a dream, because you're working your whole life for that." This determination signals a promising journey ahead for Camara in the world of Formula 1.
