Stellantis Aims for Major Expansion in India with 12 New Jeep and Citroen Models by 2030

Stellantis is gearing up for a significant growth spurt in India, unveiling a strategic initiative to ramp up its presence in the automotive sector. With a proposed investment of Rs 4,000 crore as part of its FaSTLAne 2030 roadmap, the company aims for an extensive product lineup and strong manufacturing capabilities. This plan involves launching 12 new vehicles over the next three years, which will include a variety of SUVs, an entry-level car, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), and a pickup truck.

As Stellantis looks to triple its domestic sales by 2030, the first model is anticipated to debut in the second quarter of 2027, although specific details about this initial offering remain undisclosed.

Investment and Operational Goals

This new funding will elevate Stellantis' total investment in India to nearly Rs 15,000 crore. These resources are aimed at bolstering product development, enhancing local manufacturing efforts, expanding supply chains, and upgrading the overall customer experience.

Key highlights of this expansion plan include:

  • New Investment: Rs 4,000 crore.
  • Total New Models: Seven completely new cars across Jeep and Citroen brands.
  • Model Facelifts: Five updates scheduled for existing vehicles.
  • Sales Goal: Aiming to triple domestic sales by 2030.
  • First Launch: Forecasted between April and June 2027.

New Vehicle Offerings by Segment

The introduction of these new models highlights Stellantis’ intention to diversify its product range significantly. Citroen is set to release three new models, while Jeep will introduce four. The anticipated lineup includes:

BrandPlanned Models
CitroenA-segment car, C-segment SUV, D-segment MPV
JeepB-segment SUV, C-segment SUV, D-segment SUV, D-segment pickup

Citroen's forthcoming entry-level A-segment car is projected to capture the budget-conscious market. Simultaneously, the new SUV and MPV offerings will target the mid and upper price brackets. Jeep’s offerings will span several SUV segments and include a highly-anticipated new pickup truck.

Among the most awaited models is a midsize Jeep SUV that will utilize Tata Motors' ARGOS platform, also the foundation for the upcoming Tata Sierra. This vehicle is expected to reach the market in the first half of 2028, while the specifics of the planned pickup truck, potentially similar to the Jeep Gladiator, have yet to be officially confirmed.

Beyond the new entries, Stellantis plans to refresh five of its current vehicles by 2030, with four updates set for Citroen and one for Jeep.

Powertrain Diversity and Technology Integration

Stellantis has outlined plans for its new vehicle lineup to incorporate a range of powertrain options, ensuring flexibility to meet consumers' diverse needs. This will include traditional petrol and diesel engines, along with factory-fitted CNG variants, hybrid systems, plug-in hybrids, and battery-electric vehicles (EVs).

While specific engine and battery details remain undisclosed, this multi-faceted approach to propulsion technologies will allow both Jeep and Citroen to appeal to a broader audience, enhancing the electrification of Citroen's offerings in India.

Localisation for Competitive Pricing

Local manufacturing will be critical in executing this ambitious expansion plan. Citroen boasts impressive localisation rates between 90 and 95 percent, depending on the model variant, while Jeep’s localisation is presently lower, hovering around 70-75 percent. Stellantis aims to elevate localisation beyond 90 percent for both brands.

The strategy involves developing a more extensive network of local suppliers and enhancing engineering capabilities within India, all of which will help to mitigate reliance on costly imports. As a result, vehicles will be more competitively priced within the domestic market.

Stellantis' manufacturing operations currently function at facilities in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, and Thiruvallur and Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the company has established engineering and software divisions in Bengaluru, alongside an ICT centre in Hyderabad.

Export Targets and Dealer Expansion

This new investment will not only bolster domestic sales but also facilitate the export of India-manufactured vehicles to international markets, including left-hand-drive regions. This global approach will position Stellantis as a significant player beyond the Indian market.

Stellantis is also eyeing an expanded partnership with Tata Motors, building on their existing 50:50 manufacturing collaboration. The renewed agreement focuses on advanced technology and co-development of vehicles for over 50 global markets.

The current retail framework encompasses over 300 dealerships, with around 80 percent of those selling both Jeep and Citroen vehicles under one roof. The company plans to broaden its reach into Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 cities, while also improving the availability of spare parts and service quality.

Additionally, the introduction of Stellantis-owned electric brand Leapmotor in India is under consideration. The decision will hinge on evaluating the brand’s local sales potential to establish a viable business case.
